Installing the Diesel Engine Head
In order to get the head gasket you need, you must specify the type of engine when ordering. In addition, there are gaskets of various sizes in thickness. The thickness of the gasket to be installed depends on the height of the protrusion of the pistons at TDC above the seating surface of the engine block. the Volkswagen Transporter T4 engine block (see. Fig. 193). Head gaskets are marked in the location shown in fig. 193. The black arrow on the surface of the gasket shows the part number.

♦ Take the gasket number from the spare parts list. There are special guide rods for installing the block head. They screw into the places shown in fig. 195, that is, from the side of the exhaust manifold.

♦ Clean the seating surface of the engine block.
♦ Install the head gasket.
♦ Place the block head on the guide pins (see fig. 195) and tap it with a rubber or plastic mallet.
♦ Insert the head bolts and hand-tighten until snug.
Each time you need to use new bolts for fastening the head of the block. ♦ Unscrew both guide rods (a special tool is included in the tool kit) and screw in the other two screws.
♦ Tighten all screws in stages.
To tighten these bolts, use a multi-faceted TORX type bolt wrench. Using other wrenches may damage the bolts. ♦ All bolts must be tightened to 40 Nm in the recommended order.
♦ Then tighten all bolts in the recommended order to 60 Nm.
♦ In the same recommended sequence, tighten each bolt an additional half turn.
This last puff can be done in two steps (2 x 90º). ♦ Warm up the engine and then tighten all bolts an additional half turn in the above sequence.
Do not loosen the bolts and tighten them completely evenly without jerks. Additional tightening is not required. ♦ All other work related to the installation of the block head is carried out in reverse order.
