Installing and adjusting the timing belt for a 1.9L diesel engine
Before installing the toothed belt, first of all, you need to check whether the Volkswagen Transporter T4 in the position shown in fig. 198. Bolt securing the camshaft pulley, unscrew half a turn (without turning the camshaft) and, hitting with a hammer, loosen the pulley on the camshaft cone (do not change the position of the camshaft in the future). Remove the dowel pin from the injection pump pulley.

♦ To check the toothed belt tension, the VW 210 special tool is required. Install the tool on the toothed belt between the camshaft pulleys and the injection pump, as shown in fig. 201.

Turning the tensioner (see arrow) to the right, tighten the toothed belt so that the indicator of the special tool is between the numbers 12 and 13. To turn the belt tensioner, use the key with two pins shown in fig. 202 (manufactured by MATRA M159). You can try turning the roller by hand.

♦ Tighten the tensioner axle nut to 45 Nm.
♦ Tighten the bolt holding the camshaft sprocket to the same torque.
Remove from the setting ruler, ♦ Replace all removed parts.
♦ Rotate the crankshaft two full turns at the belt pulley bolt.
♦ Hit the toothed belt hard once where the VW210 was installed, then check the belt tension again.
♦ After adjusting the tension of the toothed belt, it is necessary to check the installation of the injection pump.
The verification method is described in the corresponding subsection. ♦ Install the coolant pump pulley.
♦ Install the drive pulley with vibration damper on the camshaft pulley.
Tighten the four mounting bolts to a torque of 20 Nm, while fixing the flywheel. ♦ Replace and secure the pulley covers.
♦ Put on the V-belt and adjust its tension as described in the relevant subsection.
