Checking and adjusting the position of the timing pulleys

This work should be carried out before installing the toothed belt or when you suspect that the belt has moved (jumped one tooth or was not installed correctly).
♦ Remove the spark plugs.
♦ Temporarily attach the belt pulley to the crankshaft sprocket (after removing the bottom toothed belt cover).
♦ Rotate the crankshaft until the notch on the V-pulley is opposite the notch on the countershaft gear (fig. 129).
This corresponds to the ignition timing in the first cylinder. ♦ Rotate the Transporter T4 so that the mark on the back of the timing wheel is level with the joint plane of the cylinder head under the valve cover gasket, as shown by the arrow in fig. 129. The valve cover must first be removed.

Rice. 129 Installing the camshaft pulley in relation to the top surface of the block head

♦ Install the crankshaft V-pulley.
♦ Put on the toothed belt.
♦ Adjust the timing belt tension (see above).
Replacing the intermediate shaft
Replacing the intermediate shaft is possible only when the engine is removed from the vehicle. Before proceeding with the removal of the shaft, it is necessary to first dismantle the ignition distributor. Removing the block head is not necessary. The stuffing box flange has an oil drain port at the rear and should therefore only be installed in one position. The flange determines the axial clearance of the shaft and must be replaced when this clearance exceeds 0.25 mm. The flange is sealed in the cylinder block with an oil seal. The intermediate shaft seal must be replaced each time the shaft flange is removed. To install the oil seal, you must first install the shaft, and then insert the oil seal in the manner described when replacing the front crankshaft oil seal. Tighten the intermediate shaft flange bolts to 25 Nm.
