Timing belt replacement

Removing the Toothed Belt

♦ To replace the Volkswagen T4 , unscrew the bolts securing the upper toothed belt cover and remove it.
♦ Loosen the bolts securing the alternator, slide the alternator to the middle and remove the V-belt.
If the vehicle is equipped with power steering or air conditioning, remove the power steering pump and air conditioning pump drive belts as well. ♦ Mark appropriately the position of the V-pulley in relation to the timing gear on the crankshaft.
♦ Engage first gear, apply the handbrake and remove the bolts securing the V-pulley halves.
♦ Loosen the bolts securing the bottom toothed belt cover and remove it.
♦ As shown in fig.
125, loosen the nut securing the toothed belt tensioner (in the “b” direction) and turn the tensioner pulley counterclockwise. ♦ Remove the toothed belt from the timing pulleys. After that, you can not turn the crankshaft.

Installing the timing belt T4 when replacing

When installing the toothed belt, remember that the alignment marks of all pulleys must match (see Fig. 122).
The tension of the toothed belt is adjusted as follows: ♦ Place a wrench on the hexagon of the tensioner pulley and turn it in the direction shown in fig. 2.58 direction. The toothed belt is considered correctly tensioned if, in the place shown in fig. 126, you can rotate it no more than 90º with your thumb and forefinger. More precise adjustment can only be made using special tools. Do not try to tighten the belt as much as possible - this leads to a decrease in its service life, as well as to accelerated wear of the shaft bearings.

Rice. 126 Check timing belt tensioner T4

♦ Tighten the tensioner pulley nut to 45 Nm.
♦ Rotate the crankshaft two full turns and check if the belt tension is maintained.
♦ Fit the toothed belt guards, pulley, paying attention to the position marks and the V-belt. Adjust the generator V-belt tension.

Rice. 127 Slide the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft so that its lug (B) can be inserted into the groove (A) of the crankshaft

♦ If the timing pulley was removed from the crankshaft, reinstall it using fig. 128. Copiously lubricate the mounting bolt and tighten to 200 Nm. The crankshaft must be blocked from turning. To do this, you can engage first gear and tighten the handbrake.
