Installing camshaft drive parts VR6

After the Volkswagen Transporter T4 is installed and the chains are installed according to the marks made, then all the marks will match if none of the shafts turned.
♦ If the cylinder head is removed, the camshaft drive must be adjusted before installing the cylinder head.
Turn the crankshaft to TDC of the piston of the first cylinder. Due to the fact that the engine has six cylinders, the piston of the first cylinder passes TDC on the compression stroke once every four revolutions. ♦ Turn the engine to TDC on the first cylinder on the compression stroke.
♦ Place the lower drive chain on the crankshaft sprocket.
For this, using Fig. 173, check if the “B” mark on the crankshaft drive sprocket is in the correct position. One tooth of the sprocket is low. This tooth must be in line with the parting plane of the No. 1 main bearing cover if the No. 1 cylinder piston is at TDC. ♦ Position the large countershaft drive sprocket so that the mark on the sprocket is opposite the mark on the washer (19, Fig. 172), at the same time placing the lower chain on the teeth of the drive sprocket (see Fig. 173). If you are using a used chain, then it should be installed so that the same direction of its working movement is preserved.

♦ Mount the smaller sprocket, tighten the mounting bolts, tightening torque 100 Nm.
In this case, the intermediate shaft must be fixed. ♦ Install all removed chain guides, tighten all bolts and fasteners, tightening torques are shown in fig.
172. ♦ Check again that the marks on the countershaft sprocket and on the washer (19) match.
♦ Install the cylinder head as described above, rotate both camshafts so that the first cylinder's valve lobes point upwards, i.e.
the way they should be at TDC. Next, you will need a tool for orienting the camshafts.
The template is installed in the grooves located on the end surfaces of the camshafts (see Fig. 174).

♦ Mount the sprockets on both shafts, along with the double row chain. If you are using a used chain, then during installation it is necessary to observe the original direction of its movement. Install the ignition distributor drive under one of the shafts. Fit and tighten the sprocket mounting bolts, securing the camshafts from turning (see Fig. 175), tightening torque 100 Nm. After tightening the bolts, once again check the correct location of the marks.

Rice. 175. Hexagons are used to fix the camshafts (see arrow)

♦ Replace tensioner (10, Fig. 172).
The plunger of the chain tensioner is locked with a lock that must be unlocked by turning it with a screwdriver (see A in Fig. 173). Align the tensioner with the chain and tighten the bolts (11), tightening torque 10 Nm. Screw the bolts (6) of the chain tensioner into the cylinder head, tighten them, tightening torque 20 Nm. This device provides a tension of a two-row chain. This completes the chain tension adjustment. ♦ Check the correct assembly and adjustment of the camshaft drive. All other work is carried out in the reverse order to dismantling.
