Coolant - replacement

During operation, the coolant Conveyor T4 loses its properties and changes density. Therefore, once a year, you should check the color and density of the coolant (see Fig. 230), which is best done before winter. Regardless of the mileage, the coolant must be replaced every 2 years.

Draining

♦ Move the heater temperature adjustment lever to the right as far as it will go.
♦ Loosen the expansion tank cap.
♦ If the engine is hot, allow it to cool down before removing the plug.
♦ Drain the coolant by removing the lower coolant hose or by unscrewing the thermostat cover or plug.
♦ For a 2.4 l diesel engine, to drain the Volkswagen T4 coolant, disconnect the pipe between the expansion tank and the thermostat housing.
♦ For a 2.8 l engine, unscrew plug 25 (see Fig. 227) on the cooling system pipe.
♦ If the coolant is fresh, you can collect it in a clean container.
VW does not recommend reuse of the coolant due to the loss of some of its protective properties.

Fluid replacement is mandatory when replacing the block head, radiator, thermostat or other parts and assemblies washed by the coolant. Filling

♦ The liquid is poured into the expansion tank, from where it diverges through the channels of the cooling system.
To speed up the process of leaving the air channels, a special screw is built into the fitting of the upper hose going to the heater. Before pouring, unscrew the screw, after the liquid appears in the screw hole, screw the screw back in place. ♦ Move the heater temperature adjustment lever to the right as far as it will go.
♦ Attach the bottom hose or pipe of the cooling system to the radiator, screw the drain plug, depending on what was removed when draining the liquid.
♦ After pouring fluid into the tank up to the “MAX” mark (see Fig. 227), close the cover of the expansion tank.
♦ Warm up the engine to operating temperature (before turning on the fan).
The remaining air from the channels will be removed through the radiator cap valve or through the openings of the expansion tank cap. ♦ With the engine off, check the T4 fluid level in the expansion tank.

If necessary, add fluid up to the “MAX” mark. When the engine cools, the level will drop, but not below the “MIN” mark, keep this in mind. Checking the tightness of the cooling system

The tightness of the system can be checked using a simple tool (see Fig. 231). To do this, install the device on the expansion tank instead of the plug and use the device pump to create a pressure of about 1.0 atm. (0.1 MPa). Maintaining this pressure for at least two minutes indicates the tightness of the system, and a pressure drop indicates the presence of leaks. Locate the leak, identify the cause, and fix it.
