On fig. 234 and 235 shows the design of the engine cooling system of a Volkswagen Transporter T4 , as well as a pump.
To remove the coolant pump, proceed as follows: ♦ Drain the coolant system.
♦ Loosen the alternator and V-belt tensioner bolts, remove the V-belt (see Fig. 233).

♦ Remove the toothed belt guard and pump pulley.
The pump pulley, if necessary, can be blocked with an old V-belt. ♦ Loosen the cooling system hose clamps, remove the hoses from the pump fittings.
♦ Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the pump.
The pump is sealed in the motor housing with a rubber ring. The ring must be removed and checked. Another ring is located in the pump housing and seals the inlet fitting. Install the pump in reverse order. Tighten the bolts securing the pump and its pulley with a torque of 20 Nm. V-belt tension adjustment is described below.
Repair of the pump of system of cooling
The pump is not subject to repair.
If damaged, it must be replaced as an assembly. After dismantling, check for signs of leakage on the pump (most often they are in the form of rusty spots), and also check the condition of the bearings (turning the pump shaft by hand). In order to replace the pump, it is necessary to remove the thermostat, having previously removed the cover of its housing.
After unscrewing the mounting bolts, remove the pump from the engine block. ♦ Remove the gasket located between the two halves of the pump housing.
It must be replaced before assembly. ♦ Also replace the thermostat cover O-rings.
