V-belt tension adjustment

The belt tension must be adjusted after each removal of the coolant pump, alternator or crankshaft V-pulley of the vehicle Transporter T4 . The tension must also be checked regularly and adjusted if necessary.

Rice. 236 Adjusting the tension of the V-ribbed belt

The belt tension is checked “for deflection” in the middle between the pump and generator pulleys.
The belt is considered correctly tensioned if, under moderate pressure, it bends by 5 mm. This value refers to used belts. The new belt should only sag 2mm. Belt tension is adjusted by changing the position of the tensioner.
Bolts of fastening (see fig. 233) and a bolt (2) turn away at least on one turn.
After unscrewing them, the generator should fall down under its own weight. The tension is adjusted by turning the tensioner nut. In order to remove the V-belt, the bolt (2) must be unscrewed completely. The correct tension of the V-belt is obtained by tightening the tensioner nut to a torque of 8 Nm - if the belt is new or 4 Nm if the belt has already been used before.
Bolt (2) tighten to 35 Nm. The bolts securing the alternator with a torque of 35 Nm, and the bolt securing the tensioner plate with a torque of 20 Nm.
