♦ Removal and installation of the pump is complicated by very poor accessibility. It is recommended to carry out these works after the engine has been removed from the Transporter T4 .
♦ Switch off the ignition and wait at least 20 seconds before disconnecting the battery, this is necessary in order to be sure that the heating wire in the air mass meter has cooled down.
To prevent damage to the microprocessor module of the injection and ignition system, you can only disconnect the battery when the ignition is off.

When replacing the water pump, the coolant in the system must also be replaced.
This is necessary to give the parts of the water pump an appropriate protective film, the creation of which is not guaranteed by the old coolant. It is recommended to remove the water pump in the following sequence of operations.
♦ Drain the cooling system as described above.
♦ Disconnect the downpipe from the
catalytic converter flange, remember that during assembly it is necessary to replace the fastening nuts.
♦ Disconnect the fuel line from the cylinder head.
♦ Completely remove the air filter housing.
♦ Disconnect the motor together with the bracket from the rear rubber-metal support (see Fig. 237).
♦ Disconnect fittings, hoses, cables, etc.
to gain access to the water pump pulley. ♦ Remove the water pump pulley.
♦ Loosen the bolts and remove the water pump from the engine block.
Under the pump is an o-ring, it must be changed at each disassembly. ♦ Install the pump in reverse order.
♦ Tighten the pump bolts, tightening torque 20 Nm, tighten the belt pulley bolts, tightening torque 2.5 Nm. Install and tighten the tensioner, adjust the belt tension as described below.
