Removing and installing, adjusting the tension of the V-ribbed belt
Since September 1992, depending on the model and equipment, the auxiliary units of the engine are driven by a V-ribbed belt instead of a V-belt, which ensures greater reliability and durability.
It is not necessary to check and adjust the tension of the V-ribbed belt, as the correct belt tension is ensured by the automatic spring-loaded tensioner. On four-cylinder gasoline engines, depending on the equipment and year of manufacture of the Transporter T4 , various types of tensioners were installed.
If a used drive belt is installed, it is recommended to ensure that the belt runs in the same direction.
To do this, before removing, mark the direction of movement of the belt with a felt-tip pen. The engine crankshaft rotates clockwise during operation when viewed from the belt side of the engine. Installing the belt in the opposite direction leads to accelerated belt failure. Removal/installation
♦ Remove the crankcase guard T4 .
♦ Mark on the belt the direction of its working movement (when looking at the belt - clockwise).
♦ Using a pry bar (2) or a large screwdriver, turn the tensioner pulley lever against the direction of its spring and remove the V-ribbed belt from the alternator pulley.
The operation is easier to perform with two people. ♦ Remove the V-ribbed belt from all pulleys.
See below for belt removal features on models with a tensioner damper. ♦ Check the condition of the V-ribbed belt.
If cracks or delamination, chipping or wear of the material or surface are found, if there are traces of oil and grease, be sure to replace the belt. ♦ Before installing the belt, check that all accessories (alternator, power steering pump and, if equipped, A/C compressor) are securely fastened.
Tighten loose fasteners. Please note that the belt pulleys and the V-ribbed belt must lie in the same plane. Otherwise, the auxiliary units must be aligned. If a used belt is installed, it is recommended to ensure that the direction of its movement is the same.
♦ Slide the V-ribbed belt over the pulleys, starting with the crankshaft pulley.
Using a pry bar or a large screwdriver, turn the tensioner lever against the direction of its spring and put the V-ribbed belt on the tensioner. After that, slowly release the tension roller lever. The tension roller under the action of the spring itself will provide the necessary belt tension. ♦ Install the crankcase guard.
♦ Start the engine and visually check the movement of the belt.
For 4-cylinder petrol engines with belt tensioner damper only.
Models since 1996
♦ Place a pry bar or a large screwdriver between the two lugs (1) of the tensioner and turn the tensioner in the direction of the arrow (see Fig. 237) so that the V-ribbed belt can be removed from the tensioner. After that, disconnect the belt tensioner damper from above and remove the V-ribbed belt.
Rice. 237 Tension adjustment - models with damper
♦ Fit the V-ribbed belt onto the pulleys.
♦ Attach the belt tension damper from above.
Move the belt tensioner damper as described above and put the V-ribbed belt on the tension roller.
