Ignition system - Motronic

As already described above, the Motronic ignition system works in close cooperation with the fuel injection system, i.e.
all sensors of the fuel injection system influence the ignition timing. The ignition timing sensor of each cylinder tells the microprocessor module the appropriate position of the crankshaft at each moment in time, as a result of which the optimal ignition timing is selected. The ignition distributor is located at the end of the cylinder head and is driven by one of the camshafts. Like all other ignition distributors in Volkswagen Transporter T4 , the ignition distributor has a Hall sensor, and the spark to the spark plugs is transferred from the central contact by the rotor to the side electrodes of the distributor cap.
The battery voltage after conversion in the ignition coil is supplied to the ignition distributor, and through high-voltage wires to the spark plugs.
Ignition in individual cylinders occurs in the order 1-5-3-6-2-4. Through the wire, high voltage is supplied to the central electrode of the distributor, then the current, through the rotor (runner), which in series touches six contacts in the distributor cap, is supplied through the high-voltage wire to the corresponding spark plug. Motronic ignition control is carried out by the electronic module of the engine management system, i.e.

the distributor itself does not contain inertial or vacuum correctors. Ignition distributor

The ignition distributor must provide current in the sequence 1-5-3-6-2-4, at the right time (ignition point) to the appropriate spark plug. The distributor is driven by one of the engine's camshafts and is located in the cylinder head. The spark plug wires are located in guides, which in most cases must be removed to gain access to parts on the top side of the cylinder head.
