Handbrake (parking brake) - adjustment

Parking brake (handbrake) The T4 conveyor is adjusted under the car at the parking brake equalizing lever in the place shown in fig. 422. During normal operation, there is no need to adjust the parking brake, as it is adjusted automatically as a result of the operation of the main brake system. But if it is necessary to replace the linkage of the parking brake or brake shield, it is necessary to remove the brake drum and perform the following operations.

Rice. 422 Nut (see arrow) adjusting the length of the parking brake rod (handbrake) T4

♦ Raise the rear of the vehicle and place on stands.
♦ Fully release the parking brake lever.
♦ Remove both rear wheels.
♦ Remove the brake drums.
In order to remove the brake drum, it is necessary to move the brake pads away from it. ♦ Have an assistant tighten the nut shown by the arrow in fig.
422 after loosening the locknut. In this case, it is necessary to monitor the bursting lever at the brake shield. ♦ If this lever moves away from the brake shoe by 2 mm (see the arrow in Fig. 423), then the parking brake adjustment can be considered complete.

Rice. 423 The spreading lever must, after adjusting the rod, move away from the brake shoe by 2 mm

♦ Reinstall the brake drum, then the wheels, release the parking brake.
The wheels should turn freely without resistance. ♦ Apply the parking brake and check that the wheels do not brake after the T4 handbrake is released. If the brake pads have been set to the basic position in the manner described above, the initial travel of the parking brake lever and foot brake pedal will be greater than normal. This will disappear automatically after a few brakings as the self-adjusting mechanisms will bring the brake pads into position.
