Replacement of the injection pump drive belt for a 2.4 l diesel engine

♦ When replacing, use fig.
203. ♦ Tilt forward the front panel of the Transporter T4 and remove the crankcase protection.
♦ Loosen the alternator, move it to the middle and remove the V-belt.
♦ Unscrew the dowel pin from the injection pump pulley.
♦ Rotate the crankshaft until the number one piston is at TDC.
Shown in fig. 205 labels should be on the same lines. ♦ Insert dowel pin 2064 (see fig. 206) into the injection pump wheel and block the pump pulley.
♦ Shown in fig.
204 hold the injection pump drive gear pulley with a tool and unscrew the bolt securing this pulley to the camshaft. ♦ Remove the injection pump drive pulley together with the toothed belt.
♦ Place the toothed belt on the camshaft pulley and also on the injection pump drive pulley and finally seat them on the camshaft, and then tighten the fastening bolt so that the system can be turned by hand.
♦ Attach the tensioner to the belt at the location shown in fig. 211 and check the tension. The device should show 12 and 13 units.

Rice. 211 Checking the tension of the timing belt injection pump

♦ If necessary, loosen the screws securing the pump bracket (see fig. 212) and move the bracket to obtain the required tension.

Rice. 212 High pressure fuel pump attachment points.

♦ Check that the crankshaft is at the TDC position of the first cylinder and correct if necessary.
Block the injection pump drive pulley on the camshaft with a special tool and tighten the bolt securing the pulley to 100 Nm. ♦ Remove the dowel pin from the injection pump wheel.
♦ Check and adjust the start of compression of the injection pump.
♦ All other work must be carried out in reverse order.
♦ After removing the toothed pulley at the rear end of the camshaft, the rear oil seal can be replaced. It is replaced in the same way as the front oil seal, the replacement of which will be described below. An arrow is shown on the oil seal, which, after installing the oil seal, should indicate the direction of rotation of the camshaft.
