Camshaft oil seal replacement

The oil seal is located behind the camshaft sprocket.
It is convenient to use special tool 2085 to dismantle the oil seal. The method of its use is described below. If there is no such device, you can pull out the gland with a bent screwdriver or by drilling a couple of holes and screwing self-tapping screws into them using pliers. In any case, after dismantling, the oil seal must be replaced, regardless of the condition. ♦ Loosen the alternator mounting bolts Transporter T4 .
Move the alternator to the engine block and remove the V-belt. ♦ Remove the upper timing belt cover.
To do this, a Torx type bolt wrench with a hex socket is required. ♦ Set the piston of the first cylinder to TDC To do this, use the ignition marks.
♦ Loosen the toothed belt tensioner and remove the toothed belt from the camshaft pulley.
Tie up the belt so that it cannot slip off the pulley onto the crankshaft. The crankshaft must not be rotated after this, otherwise the pistons will damage the valves. ♦ Block the camshaft with an old toothed belt on its pulley.
♦ Loosen the bolt securing the camshaft sprocket and remove the bolt together with the washer.
♦ Remove the pulley from the shaft.
♦ Remove the key from the camshaft.
♦ Take tool 2085 shown in fig. 95, and unscrew the inner part two turns (about 3 mm) from the outer (outer) part, and then lock it in this position with the knurled bolt.

♦ Lubricate the conical, threaded part of the tool head with engine oil, place it on the camshaft and push it under the oil seal. Then, pressing the tool evenly against the oil seal, screw it into the oil seal (Fig. 96) until it stops against the camshaft.

♦ Loosen the knurled screw (B, fig. 95) and rotate part (A) of the tool until the oil seal is removed from its hole.
♦ Fix the tool in a vise and remove the oil seal from it with pliers.
♦ Before installing a new oil seal, lubricate the sealing lips as well as its outer surface and place the oil seal directly against the bore (with the spring in the middle). The camshaft oil seal can be installed in the same way as the front crankshaft oil seal.
