Piston assembly with connecting rod
♦ Heat the pistons to 60º (by immersing them in hot water).
♦ Prepare an appropriate mandrel so that its diameter matches the inside diameter of the piston pin.
♦ Insert the piston pin into the heated piston and connecting rod.
When connecting the piston to the connecting rod, the following recommendations should be observed:
- the arrow (drawn or stamped on the bottom of the new pistons) must be directed towards the drive belt (see Fig. 97).
- the lugs on the lower head of the connecting rod and its cover must be directed towards the belt pulley of the Volkswagen Transporter T4 (Fig. 99).
- the designation of the cylinder number on the lower head of the connecting rod and the cap of the lower head of the connecting rod must be the same.
♦ Check if the piston moves freely on the connecting rod after assembly.
♦ Using the tool, fit the piston rings one by one into the piston grooves (see fig. 102). In order not to confuse the compression and oil scraper rings, you should pay attention to the shape of their section. All rings are labeled "TOP" or "OPEN" on one side and this label must be visible from the bottom of the piston (top) after the ring is installed.
