Replacement of crankshaft oil seals

The front and rear crankshaft oil seals of the Transporter T4 must be replaced each time the crankshaft or oil seal caps are removed or if they lose their tightness.

Both oil seals can be replaced without removing the engine from the vehicle. Removal

To remove the front oil seal, the V-belt(s), toothed belt guard, toothed belt, V-belt and toothed pulleys must be removed.
To loosen the bolt securing the crankshaft pulley, engage fourth or fifth gear, apply the handbrake hard, and loosen the bolt with an Allen wrench. To remove the gland, use the tool, as well as the tip shown in Fig. 113. The tip must be screwed into the crankshaft as deep as possible with a hex key. Only then can the device be installed. The oil seal is removed in the same way as the camshaft oil seal is removed.

♦ To remove the rear oil seal, disconnect the gearbox from the engine, remove the clutch and flywheel (in the case of an automatic transmission, the drive disc), see fig. 118. For removal of a back epiploon use the tool shown on fig. 114 or try to pry it out carefully with a screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the engine block. If the engine is disassembled, remove the appropriate cover along with the oil seal. Then knock the seal out of the cover.

♦ Coat the sealing lip and outer surface of the new oil seal with clean engine oil, carefully seat it flush with the outer surface of the oil seal cover.

Installing the oil seal - the engine is installed in the car

To install the front oil seal, you need to use a special tool.
♦ Fit the guide sleeve onto the crankshaft journal as shown in fig. 114. Copiously lubricate the outer as well as the inner surfaces of the oil seal with clean engine oil and put it on the guide sleeve. Put the clamping sleeve of the tool on the guide sleeve and tighten the axial bolt of the sleeve so that the oil seal is recessed into the opening of the cover, and then remove the tool. If a new crankshaft rear oil seal is installed, it must be aligned with the shaft journal. It is important not to damage the sealing lips. Then use the special tool 2003/1 (see Fig. 117) or a self-made plate with a hole in the middle for the bolts screwed into the threaded holes of the clutch basket to install the oil seal. By tightening both bolts evenly, you can install the oil seal in place.
