Installing the VR6 cylinder head
♦ Thoroughly clean the seating surfaces of the head and cylinder block during installation.
♦ To accurately position the gasket, screw two guide bushes into the cylinder block (over the bolt holes (20) and (12), see fig. 141).
Check if both bushings are in the block. Lay the cylinder head gasket on the guide bushings with the inscription "Oben" or "Top" up. Always install only a new gasket, which is removed from the packaging immediately before assembling the engine. ♦ When installing the Volkswagen T4 block head with the camshafts correctly deployed, it is not possible for the valves to hit the piston crowns.
But, just in case, you can set the piston of the first cylinder to TDC, and from this position turn the crankshaft 1/4 turn against the direction of working rotation. As a result, all pistons will be below TDC. Install the block head and tap it with a plastic or rubber mallet. ♦ Insert the block head bolts and hand-tighten them.
♦ In the sequence indicated in fig.
141, tighten the block head bolts in stages, tightening torque 40 Nm. A special wrench must be used to tighten the bolts, otherwise the bolt heads may be damaged. ♦ Tighten all bolts in the same sequence, tightening torque 60 Nm.
♦ Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown one half turn each (or twice 1/4 turn).
♦ Install the drive chain on both sprockets and adjust its tension.
The colored mark on the chain, which was applied before dismantling, must again be in the same position. ♦ Install the valve head cover with a new gasket.
♦ Fit the top of the intake manifold to the bottom of the intake manifold.
When tightening the bolts, first connect the two halves of the manifold, and then attach the upper part to the rear bracket. ♦ The rest of the installation of the cylinder head is carried out in the reverse order to dismantling.
♦ When finished, fill the Volkswagen Transporter T4 coolant.
♦ Install the drive belts and adjust their tension.
