Checking and installing the VR6 crankshaft
Only the differences specific to the 2.8 Volkswagen Transporter T4 .
When checking the root clearances with Plastigage wires, tighten the bolts to 30 Nm, then, from this position, tighten the bolts another half turn (180º).
When checking the connecting rod clearances, the tightening torque is 10 Nm.
The maximum allowable clearance for main and connecting rod bearings is 0.10 mm.
Installation of the crankshaft
The moment of an inhaling of bolts of radical covers of 30 Nm.
It is necessary to tighten the bolts from the middle outwards in several passes. From this position, tighten each bolt in turn an additional half turn in one motion. After tightening the caps, rotate the crankshaft several times to make sure that there is no interference with rotation. ♦ Check crankshaft end play as described above.
♦ Install pistons and connecting rods.
♦ Install the front and rear crankshaft covers, with new oil seals, as described below.
♦ If the ring gear of the
speed sensor (6, Fig. 167) is damaged, it must be replaced. The tightening torque of its fastening bolts is 10 Nm, from this position, tighten the bolts another quarter of a turn.

♦ Install the flywheel using new mounting bolts.
Block the flywheel from turning and tighten the bolts, tightening torque 70 Nm, from this position tighten the bolts another quarter of a turn. ♦ Mount the basket and clutch disc and tighten the fastening bolts, tightening torque 20 Nm.
♦ On vehicles with automatic transmission, install the drive disc and fluid coupling.
Coat the mounting bolts with D6-thread lock and tighten them to 75 Nm. ♦ Replace the oil pump.
♦ Sealant the new crankcase gasket to the cylinder block, install the oil sump.
Tighten the bolts, tightening torque 20 Nm. Further assembly takes place in the reverse order to disassembly.
