Replacing crankshaft oil seals VR6

The front and rear oil seals of the T4 Conveyor must be changed when a shadow of engine oil appears, each time the crankshaft is disassembled or the corresponding covers are removed.
For example, the fact that the rear oil seal is damaged can be guessed by the slipping of the clutch. To replace the oil seals, it is convenient to use a special tool, but if desired, you can do without it. Both T4 crankshaft seals can be replaced without removing the engine from the vehicle.

Removing the crankshaft oil seals

To replace the front oil seal, it is necessary to remove the damper from the crankshaft and all parts in front of it.
Fix the crankshaft. The best way to do this is to engage the gear and put the car on the handbrake. At the service station, a special device is used for this. Use a puller to remove the front oil seal, but #3273 puller is used for these oil seals.
The puller is used as follows: ♦ Unscrew the inside of the puller three full turns (approx. 4 mm) and fix it in this position with the locking screw.
♦ Lubricate the threaded head of the tool with engine oil and install on the crankshaft, pushing as far as possible into the oil seal.
♦ Loosen the locking screw and rotate the inside of the puller while pushing it in until the stuffing box is dismantled.
Install the puller in a vise and remove the oil seal from it. ♦ To replace the T4 crankshaft rear oil seal, remove the gearbox, clutch and drive flywheel/disc. When dismantling the rear oil seal, it is convenient to use the tool shown in fig. 169, in the absence of it, use a screwdriver or, having drilled holes and screwed self-tapping screws into them, the gland is dismantled with simple tongs. Take care not to damage the oil seal bore in the cylinder block. If the engine is removed, then it is easier to remove the corresponding cover, after which it is not difficult to replace the oil seal.

Installation with the engine removed

♦ Lubricate the oil seal with engine oil and carefully press it into the cover flush (level with the outer surface).
♦ Carefully fit the oil seal cover onto the crankshaft, slide the cover against the cylinder block and align carefully.

Step by step, in several passes around the perimeter, tighten the bolts. Installing with Engine Installed

♦ Install the guide sleeve on the crankshaft journal, lubricate the oil seal with engine oil and install it on the guide sleeve. Put the pressure sleeve of tool 3266 (see Fig. 170) on the guide sleeve and, tightening the central bolt, install the oil seal in place. The damper mounting bolt is used.

♦ The rear oil seal of the Volkswagen T4 crankshaft is carefully hammered into place with a hammer handle, avoiding large distortions. Take care not to damage the working edges. You can use the tool for installing oil seals No. 2003/1, or you can independently make a disk with a hole in the middle, into which the end of the crankshaft passes, and two holes around the perimeter at the level of the holes for attaching the clutch basket. Evenly tightening both bolts, press the stuffing box into place (see Fig. 171).
