diesel engine block head
Given the design features of the Volkswagen Transporter T4 , below are a few notes that the reader should be familiar with before proceeding with any work on the block head.
The camshaft located in the head of the block rests either on five (1.9 l) or on four supports (2.4 l).
The rear support simultaneously acts as an axial clearance regulator. Access to the springs and valve lifters opens after dismantling the camshaft. When dismantling the shaft, it is necessary to follow the recommendations in order to avoid deflection of the camshaft due to the action of the valve springs. When ordering a new camshaft, the codes for the old shaft must be specified. Special valve clearance adjustment is not required as these engines use hydraulic tappets that automatically adjust the valve clearance.
The manufacturer often does not specify exact values for checking valve stem clearances, free valve spring heights, etc., since these values are measured using special tools.
If you have any doubts, contact a VW workshop.
Valve spring plates, valve springs and valve stem seals are difficult to access, as they are located in the recesses of the block head. You will need a special tool to remove and install them. The following sequence of actions must be strictly observed.
