Removing the Diesel Engine Head

The block head can be removed from the engine installed in the Volkswagen Transporter T4 . If the engine has been previously removed from the vehicle, the described initial operations do not need to be carried out. It is unacceptable to remove the block head if the engine temperature is more than 40ºС. On fig. 184 and 185 shows the arrangement of the heads of the blocks of both diesel engines. The sequence of removing parts is the same as the numbering of these parts in the figures.

♦ Remove the head cover.
Carefully remove the gasket, as it can be reused if it is not damaged during disassembly. Clean and degrease its seating surface. ♦ Remove the toothed belt as described in the relevant section.
Remove the camshaft sprocket. In a five-cylinder engine, remove the injection pump drive timing belt from the other side of the camshaft. These actions are described in the section on injection pump. ♦ Using a 12 mm socket for TORX bolts, unscrew the block head bolts in stages, in reverse order than shown in fig. 186 and 187. Remove the block head bolts and remove the block head from the engine housing. If necessary, loosen the head with light blows from a rubber or lead hammer. It is strictly forbidden to drive a screwdriver along the joint for the same purpose. Remove the head gasket. Thoroughly clean and degrease the head and block seating surfaces.
