Front suspension
The front suspension of the Volkswagen Transporter T4 (see Fig. 378) consists of a beam (crossbar) (53), upper (29) and lower (22) arms, torsion (rod) springs (39), and a stabilizer (48). Hydraulic shock absorbers (2) serve to dampen suspension vibrations and ensure reliable contact of the wheel with the road surface. The front suspension beam is attached directly to the body and is a support for the front of the power unit. The individual suspension parts can be removed independently of each other.

The tightening torque depends on the thread diameter. M12: 75 Nm and turn 90º, M14: 110 Nm.
Front suspension Transporter T4 is mounted on the front beam (53).
On the production model since August 1992, the mounting location of the rear gearbox support has been changed. These beams cannot be installed on early production cars. In November of the same year, the bolt (18) was modernized (strengthened), its diameter increased from 12 to 14 mm. The details (19), (20), (21) and the crossbar itself (53) have undergone corresponding changes. If necessary, some of these parts can be modified, some will have to be replaced. The torsion bar is a kind of spring, as it is a similar elastic element, but unlike the spring, which “works” in bending, the torsion bar “works” in twisting. Torsion bars cannot be interchanged. Designation on the end of the torsion bar: “R” - right ; "L" - left. As a spare part, the torsion bar is supplied with a lever (40, Fig. 378). Marked with paint at a distance of 75 mm from the flange: white - corresponds to a diameter of 23.8 mm; green - 25.3 mm; brown - 26.4 mm Before installation, check the presence of the paintwork, restore the coating if necessary. As
previously mentioned when replacing the drive axle shaft, for most work it is necessary to install reliable supports under the body.If in the future it will be necessary to use these supports, in the text it will say “Install supports.”
On vehicles without power steering, the tie rod end mounting hole is 20 mm further outward than on vehicles with power steering.
Since November 1992, the diameter of the tie rod end pin and the corresponding bore has been 16 mm.
