Torsion bars - removal and installation

The T4 torsion bars are marked according to their position in the vehicle and must not be interchanged.
Designations are stamped on the ends of the torsion bars. The letter “R” is embossed on the right, and the letter “L” on the left. The new torsion bar Transporter T4 is supplied with a lever (40, Fig. 378). it is necessary to remove the fuel tank.Mounting
the torsion bar to the upper arm is shown in Fig. 379.

Remove the exhaust pipe heat shield.
If necessary, disconnect the exhaust pipe and lower it down. On the corresponding side, find the Volkswagen T4 torsion arm (19). Below this lever is a nut (20) that is screwed onto an adjusting bolt (18). This bolt adjusts the height of the corresponding side of the front of the body and therefore it is necessary to mark the position of the nut in the place shown in fig. 380. Measure the amount of protrusion of the bolt from the nut, then the nut can be unscrewed.

Rice. 380 Nut position marking

If the paint coating of the torsion bar is damaged, then the coating must be restored before installing the torsion bar in place.
♦ When the torsion arm is unloaded, unscrew the nut (8, fig. 379) and bolt (6), then remove the torsion bar.
The torsion bar is installed in the reverse order. If the nut shown in fig. 380 is set to its original position, then checking the height of the front of the car is not necessary, as it will most likely meet the requirements. If the nut is in a different position, then you will have to measure and adjust the height of the car in the manner described below.
