Airbags
Cars Transporter T4 , equipped with a system of airbags for the driver and front passenger, have the inscription "AIRBAG" on the steering wheel pad and on the right side of the instrument panel (dashboard).
The airbag system, together with the seat belts, provide additional head and upper body protection for the driver and front seat passenger in frontal collisions.
In addition to their primary protective function, the seat belts also ensure that the driver and front passenger are positioned in frontal impacts so that the airbags provide the most protection.
The airbag system does not work in case of:
- side impacts;
- blows to the rear of the car;
- overturning;
- weak frontal impacts.
The T4 airbag system is not a replacement for seat belts, but is part of the vehicle's overall passive safety system.
Please note that airbags are most effective only when used in conjunction with seat belts. The system of airbags Transporter T4 consists of the following main components and parts:
- electronic control unit for the system and control of the functional readiness of the system;
- two airbags (airbags with a gas generator) for the driver (located in the steering wheel) and the front passenger (located in the front panel);
- control lamp on the front panel.
The readiness of the air bag system is controlled by an electronic device.
After the ignition is switched on, the airbag warning lamp T4 comes on for approximately 3 seconds.
The system readiness violation is indicated by the following:
- when the ignition is switched on, the control lamp does not light up;
- approximately 3 seconds after the ignition is switched on, the control lamp does not go out;
- after turning on the ignition, the control lamp goes out and then starts to glow again;
- while driving, the control lamp lights up or flickers.
In these cases, it is necessary to contact a VW workshop.
System operation
The airbag system is activated in the event of severe frontal collisions.
The dimensions of the sector of the direction of the frontal collision, in which the system is triggered, are shown in Fig. 37.
Rice. 37 Airbag sensitivity sector
When the system is activated, the air bags are filled with working gas and, inflating, unfold in front of the driver and passenger.
By resting the fully inflated air bags against the driver and front passenger (see Fig. 38), the forward momentum of people is dampened and the risk of injury to the head and upper body is significantly reduced.
The air bag on impact, under the influence of the load from the body of the driver or the passenger sitting next to him, smoothly releases gas to soften the impact of the head and upper body on the airbag. After a collision, the air bag becomes empty and does not obstruct the view.
Rice. 38 How airbags work
The filling of the air bag occurs in a matter of seconds, which provides reliable protection in case of an accident.
Disabling the front passenger airbag
On your T4 vehicle, you can disable the front passenger airbag, which does not change the logic of the control module.
To connect the front passenger airbag, you will have to contact the VW CTO.
Each time the ignition is switched on, the airbag warning lamp comes on for approximately 3 seconds and then starts flashing for 12 seconds.
