Engine starting
Before starting the engine of the Transporter T4 , the gear lever must be moved to the neutral position (on an automatic transmission, set the selector lever to the “P” or “N” position) and securely tighten the parking brake.
On a car with a manual transmission, it is recommended to depress the clutch pedal while starting the engine - the starter will only rotate the engine crankshaft.
As soon as the engine starts, release the ignition key - the starter should not work with the engine.
After starting the Transporter T4, a cold engine will work with increased noise for a short time, since the oil pressure in the hydraulic valve lifters is not yet high enough.
This is normal and should not worry you. Until the engine reaches operating temperature, avoid running it at high speeds and full fuel delivery.
Features of the operation of vehicles with a catalytic converter.
It is not recommended to start the engine from a tow, try starting it with the battery of another car.
Gasoline engines
These engines are equipped with a fuel injection system that automatically, at any outside temperature, provides the optimum ratio of fuel and air.
Before starting a cold or warm engine and during start-up, it is not recommended to press the “gas” pedal.
If it is not possible to immediately start the T4 engine, it is recommended to suspend the starting process and repeat it after 5 minutes.
If the engine still does not start, it is recommended to check the electric fuel pump fuse.
After starting a hot engine, it is recommended to let it run at medium speed for some time.
Diesel engines
Preheating device
On vehicles with a 75 kW diesel engine, after turning the key in the ignition switch to the "Ignition on" position, depending on the temperature of the engine coolant, the control lamp signals or does not signal the need for preheating.
On vehicles with a 50 kW diesel engine, the preheating device switches on automatically after the driver's door is closed.
If the engine is then not started, the preheating will not be automatically switched on each subsequent opening and closing of the driver's door. Starting the engine - engines 50, 55 and 57 kW
Starting T4 cold engines is facilitated by a special device built into the high pressure fuel pump (hereinafter referred to as high pressure fuel pump) (cold engine start assist device).
This device is activated when the handle on the left near the steering column is fully extended.
Starting a cold engine
At an outside air temperature of -15ºС to +18ºС, before starting the T4 Conveyor, it is necessary to fully extend the handle of the cold engine start system.
At lower temperatures, this handle can remain extended even after the appearance of stable ignition of the fuel - then the engine warms up faster.
Turn the key in the ignition switch to position 2 - the control lamp of the preheating system lights up.
The lamp goes out after reaching a temperature sufficient to ignite the fuel. It is not recommended to turn on powerful current consumers for the period of starting preheating, otherwise the battery may be discharged.
It is recommended to start the engine immediately after turning off the warning lamp.
During start-up, it is not recommended to press the gas pedal.
If the ignition of the fuel in the engine is still unstable, let the starter run for a few more seconds (no more than half a minute) until the engine can run on its own.
If the T4 engine does not start, turn on the preheat again and then try to start the engine again as described.
If the engine still does not start this time, check the preheater system fuse, it may be blown. It is recommended that the retractable handle for easier starting the engine be fully depressed back as soon as the engine warms up to operating temperature.
Starting a warm engine
The preheating control lamp does not light up - the engine can be started immediately.
In this case, it is not recommended to turn on the cold start assist device and press the “gas” pedal. Starting the engine - 75 kW engine
When the outside air temperature is above +5°C, the Transporter T4 engine can immediately be started without preheating.
It is not recommended to press the “gas” pedal during start-up. When the outside air temperature is below +5ºС, turn the key in the ignition lock to position (2) - the preheating control lamp will light up.
The lamp will go out after reaching a temperature sufficient for normal ignition of the fuel. Before and during the activation of the preheating, all other large current consumers must be turned off - otherwise the battery will be overloaded with a large current.
Start the engine immediately after turning off the warning lamp.
It is not recommended to press the “gas” pedal during start-up.
If the ignition of the fuel in the engine is still unstable, allow the starter to run for a few more seconds (no more than half a minute) until the engine can work independently.
If the T4 engine does not start, turn on the preheat again and then try to start the engine again as described above.
If the engine still fails to start this time, check the system fuse, it may be blown. Starting a warm engine
The preheating control lamp does not light up - the engine can be started immediately.
If the vehicle's fuel tank has been completely depleted, it may take longer than usual to start the engine after refueling, up to one minute.
The fuel supply system must be freed from the air in it. Stopping the engine
After prolonged operation at high load, it is not recommended to immediately turn off the engine - it is necessary to let it idle for two minutes to avoid a sharp temperature drop in different areas of the engine (local overheating).
