Tie rod - replacement

In order to replace the T4 , it is necessary to remove the steering gear, otherwise the rack and pinion may be damaged.
♦ Move the rubber boot on the steering rod outwards.
Remove grease. ♦ If the steering gear is removed, fix its gear rack in a vise.
Be sure to use aluminum pads so as not to damage the rail. ♦ Loosen the tie rod using the special wrench.
If these works are carried out on a mechanism installed in the car, then the key is installed as shown in Fig. 415. The figure shows a special key for dismantling the steering rod.

Clean the inner thread of the gear rack from the old sealing mass.
Coat the threads of the new steering rack with sealing compound "D6" and screw the steering rod into the rack.
♦ Reattach the toothed bar in a vice and tighten the tie rod to 70 Nm.
Thoroughly lubricate the toothed rack using special grease "ADF 063 000 04". ♦ Replace the rubber boot on the rack.
♦ After installing the steering box, adjust the camber/toe and tighten both tie rod locknuts to 55 Nm.
