Removal and installation of the oil pump of the diesel engine

The following is a description of the removal and installation of the oil pump of the five-cylinder Transporter T4 .
To perform these actions, special tools and fixtures are required. ♦ Remove the power steering pump and its drive V-belt.
♦ Loosen the bolts securing the generator.
Move it and remove the V-belt. ♦ Remove the front timing belt covers.
♦ Remove the bolt securing the vibration damper.
For this purpose, install a special holder in the vibration damper (see Fig. 209), or engage first gear and apply the handbrake. Unscrew the bolt with a spanner wrench. ♦ Loosen and remove toothed belt.
♦ Remove the oil pan.
♦ From the underside of the block, unbend the lock washers, unscrew the fastening bolts and remove the oil supply pipe with the gasket (see Fig. 223).
♦ The pump mounting bolts can now be unscrewed.
They are shown in fig. 223. After removing the oil pump, do not rotate the crankshaft. Install the pump in reverse order. The following recommendations should be followed: ♦ Always replace the crankshaft oil seal installed in the pump housing and the pump gasket.
♦ Tighten the pump mounting bolts to 20 Nm.
♦ Replace the pump feed pipe gasket and the bolts indicated by the arrows in fig. 223, tighten to 10 Nm. It is necessary to use new lock washers, which, after tightening the bolts, are bent on the head of the bolts.
