Master brake cylinder

All VW T4 vehicles use a tandem brake master cylinder with a double reservoir.
Each of the two circuits of the brake system is fed from a separate chamber of the expansion tank. The braking system is divided into autonomous circuits diagonally. The piston of the main brake cylinder closest to the brake pedal pusher. Transporter T4 feeds the working cylinders of the left front and right rear wheels, the next piston supplies brake fluid to the mechanisms of the right front and rear left wheels.

Removal and installation of the main brake cylinder

The main brake cylinder T4 is installed on the end surface of the vacuum booster and can be dismantled from the side of the engine compartment.
On fig. 447 shows the mounting of the main brake cylinder and vacuum booster. ♦ Loosen the union nuts of the brake pipes and carefully move the pipes to the side.
♦ At the reservoir cap, disconnect the electrical wires from the brake fluid level sensor.
This sensor is not installed on all car models. ♦ Remove the bolts securing the brake master cylinder.

The main brake cylinder is installed in reverse order. The pusher of the vacuum booster does not require adjustment. Repair of the main brake cylinder

The main brake cylinder T4 cannot be repaired.
If damaged, it must be replaced as an assembly. The master brake cylinder has an internal diameter of 22.2 mm. In the case of installing a new master brake cylinder, the compensation tank should be disconnected from the old one. Both rubber bushings (3, fig. 447) are seated in the master brake cylinder and can be pulled out with a screwdriver. Lubricate the new bushings with brake fluid and install them in the sockets intended for them in the master brake cylinder.
