Distributor

The ignition distributor ensures the transmission of the ignition voltage to the candles in the appropriate order (1 - 3 - 4 - 2) and at the appropriate times (with the necessary ignition advance). The ignition distributor is driven from the intermediate shaft of the engine and is located in the cylinder block of the Volkswagen T4 engine .

Service

The cover of the distributor of ignition needs to be cleaned regularly outside and inside for removal of the remains of dust and humidity.
The ignition distributor slider must also be cleaned. For cleaning, use a cloth soaked in solvent, after cleaning, check if there are any visible cracks on the surface of the cover and slider. Otherwise, the relevant parts must be replaced. Brass contacts should never be filed or ground.

Keep external surfaces of high-voltage wires clean and protected from moisture. Periodically remove all wires from the distributor cap, clean the wire lugs and check their condition. It is unacceptable to shorten the high voltage wires to correct the fastening of the wire lugs. Damaged wires must be replaced. Removal and installation

♦ Remove the high-voltage wires from the cover of the ignition distributor, fold out the spring clips and remove the cover from the ignition distributor.
♦ Remove the connector from the Hall sensor socket on the side of the ignition distributor (see Fig. 290).
To release the connector, fold back the spring clips. ♦ Turn the crankshaft so that the piston of the first cylinder is at TDC and mark the position of the ignition distributor runner on the edge of the ignition distributor housing (see Fig. 296).
To turn the crankshaft, put an open-end wrench on the head of the bolt that secures the timing gear pulley (in the middle of the crankshaft belt pulley). ♦ Remove the bolt securing the ignition distributor and remove it together with the pressure plate.
Remove the ignition distributor from the engine. Remove the sealing ring (see Fig. 288). ♦ If the engine crankshaft did not turn, you can install the distributor in place by aligning its marks.
If the installed ignition distributor was repaired or the crankshaft was turned, proceed as follows: ♦ In an engine installed in a T4 Transporter , set the piston of the first cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke, that is, both valves of the first cylinder must be closed (if the valve cover is removed), or turn the crankshaft so that the “O” sign on the flywheel is in line with the mark in the control window (see A, Fig. 293).
♦ With the engine removed from the vehicle, turn the crankshaft so that the notch on the crankshaft damper (belt pulley) is in line with the arrow on the toothed belt guard (B, Fig. 294). The mark on the camshaft pulley must be opposite the mark on the timing belt housing as shown in Fig. 294. These instructions refer to the installation of the engine after repair or after other work on the engine, during which the ignition distributor was dismantled from the engine removed from the vehicle.

Rice. 295 Installing the collar rib of the oil pump shaft before installing the ignition distributor

♦ Check whether the rib of the oil pump shaft clamp is installed in the longitudinal direction, ie.
parallel to the axis of the crankshaft, as shown in Fig. 295. If necessary, the rib can be turned with tongs (pulled out, turned and besieged in place). ♦ Turn the ignition distributor slider so that it is set against the mark located on the edge of the ignition distributor housing, as shown in fig. 296.

Rice. 296 Mounting position of the distributor slider - in line with the mark on the edge of the distributor body

♦ Mount the ignition distributor in the engine in this position and secure the retaining plate.
♦ Reinstall the connector in the ignition distributor, put on the latches.
