Lower ball joint replacement

To remove the lower hinge, it is enough to unscrew two bolts from the Transporter T4 (see arrow in Fig. 384).
♦ Install load balancers in the front suspension.
♦ Remove the pivot nut from below the transverse arm.
♦ At the lower transverse arm, remove the nut securing the shock absorber and drive out the long bolt.
On the other side of the arm, this will cause the stabilizer mount to loosen. ♦ Remove both screws shown in fig.
384, and by pushing the lower lever down, disconnect the lever from the steering knuckle. ♦ Using the puller shown in fig.
387, push the ball joint out of the lower wishbone. ♦ Install the new ball joint and press it into the control arm also using a puller.
However, in this case, the legs of the puller must be brought behind the plate that secures the hinge to the steering knuckle. The hinge can also be carefully hammered into the hole and then set into position with the hinge nut. ♦ Connect the hinge to the steering knuckle, screw in both mounting bolts, tightening them to a torque of 55 Nm.
♦ Screw the pivot nut onto the ball stud and tighten to 110 Nm.
This nut is self-locking and must therefore be replaced every time. ♦ Slide the stabilizer support onto the long arm bolt. Hammer the bolt into the transverse arm and put on the shock absorber. Tighten the nut securing the shock absorber and the long bolt to 160 Nm.
